What first inspired you to be creative? What inspires you to be creative today?
Movies and photography were my first two inspirations as a kid. I love visually compelling subjects. Thats why I take so much care in the presentation of my cocktails. Now I am inspired by flavors and experiences. I can taste something and be inspired to create a whole experience from a single flavor.
What is the proudest moment of your career?
So far, I have to say that winning my first bartending competition was a very proud moment. Not only did I win and met so many people who are now dear friends, but I tied with another badass female bartender and that made me feel crazy good. But to be honest, when a guest tells me they LOVE their cocktail, or maybe a photo I took of them, I get filled with the exact same joy as the night I won the punch contest. Although I am very proud overall at how strong and focused I have become since quarantine.
What’s the best piece of advise you’ve been given?
“Start with a quarter.” This is actually something my bartending counterpart and I say often to each other. Basically it means, start with a small amount, taste your drink, add more as desired, and build thoughtfully. Always start with a little because you can add more!
What is your definition of “art”? What does it mean to you?
Art is an expression. It cannot be defined and will have different expressions depending on the context and the environment. Art to me is an opportunity to feel and be felt.
